The sigma is definitively my next purchase. Also the sigma 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter are real deals compared to the Nikon. Has soon has my wife will "approve" the budget. I will go for the Sigma + 1.4 teleconverter. In USA, we can get both for around $900 usd.

Just an alternativesuggestion... Sigma 100-300mm f4 HSM + 1.4 TC

If f2.8 is more important than extra reach then the combo already mentioned above in this thread would probably be best, but for me who mostly shoots sports in summer months, f4 is more than bright enough and its HSM focusing is nice and fast:-)

I have 2 Sigma lenses for my D70 now (100-300 f4 and the 105mm f2.8 macro) and have really been impressed with price/performance ratio, thatthe NIkon glass appears to be unable tocompete with... the 1.4 TC's next on my wishlist :-)

Also a quick question, how much is the 100-300mm?

also, how does the speed of focusing compare with the the sigma hsm to nikon af-s?

It depends on price / condition /warranty I suppose...

The one i got was boxed and as new, but only came with a 6 month warranty... I figured £220 saving was worth 6 months less warranty.Although that might have been different if lens had had more advanced features like vibration reduction /stabilisation, where the warranty might be more important perhaps...

Up to you really :-)
