I just spent a weekend shooting at an indoorswim meet with an old Sigma 70-300 mm f/4.-5.8 D. I also used the Nikon kit lens - 18-70 3.5-4.6 G. Lighting was a major issue with both.

What's the best lens for this type of venue that won't break the bank? I'd like to stay under $500 if possible.

Thanks.

A few possible solutions off the top of my head:
1. Get a Nikon 50/f 1.8 and a Nikon 85/f 1.8 lens, should be about $450 total.
2. Get a used Nikon 80-200 2.8 lens, might take a while but should be able to find a decent one (at places like keh.com or ebay) for around $500.
3. A midrange 2.8 zoom, like the Tamron 28-75 XR Di 2.8 for about $300.

murphyc is absoluty right. This iswhat you canget below $500.

If you want a 70-200 zoom you need to spend around $700 for a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM and maybe an extra $150 for a 1.4x teleconverter.
