Has anyone tried the Nikon 80-400mm VR lens on the Nikon D70? I realize this is not a fast / bright lens but how is it for stand-still handheld photography? Has anyone tried astrophotography with this lens (e.g. moon, etc...)?

I'm looking for a second lens to complement the Nikon 18-70mm lens kit.

Well let me see if I can help ya out. Just this week I bought a 70-200 f2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR and I absolutely love it! The first night I got it I went out back and with it zoomed in all the way to a building across the street, I was able to hand-hold it and take a pic at 1/13 at f2.8. The picture was sharp and of course there was no blur. I showed it to my boss and he still thinks I used a monopod...WRONG!!!:-)

I'm at work right now and I'll have to see if I saved it at home. It was just a test shot and I usually don't keep those on the computer. I could however mailthe 5X7 print to you, if you would like.

If I do have it, I can email it to you.

I also have the 70-200 f2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR along with the TC20EIIand have to admit I love 'em. My other lens is the Nikon 24-85 - IMHO the 70-200 would be a great compliment to the 18-70 even without the TC.

If you're looking at other brands becauseprices, like I did, be sure to see what comes with the lens - the 70-200 comes complete - with lens hood - tripod collar -case. Some other brands don't.

How much image degradation is there with the TC20-EII attached to the 70-200VR? I am thinking of getting that combination.

I only have the TC14E Steve, but there is only a loss of one stop with it and two stops with the TC20E. I notice no degradation with the TC14E at all, and according to Thom Hogan there is a slight softening with the TC20Ebut it is well up to the task. Thanks for your help on the 200/400, and to return the favour have a look at this review:-
