This is what they look like.

I have the Sigma 70-300 APO f/4-5.6 Macro Super II. Its a nice lens for the money. Its not a very fast focusing lens and it hunts sometimes in low light but for the money it's a very good lens. The Macro ability is a plus, which the Nikon is lacking.

Optically its suppose to be better than the Nikon, but they are probably very
close.
Nikon lenses are built very good.
Difference in sharpness? I don't own the Nikon but I have tried it and I think the Sigma is sharper but thats just my opinion. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
If they are in your price range?

Good Luck

Ray

simo83,

Yes, I do use my Sigma on a D70, which is my first DSLR.

This is a sample shot I took right after I bought it last year. This was cropped but I forget how much.

I don't have the resources to buy pro glass. I don't consider either one pro glass. Fast glass will cost a heck of a lot more. These are both pretty good lenses for the money. Like I said, the Sigma is also a macro.
I don't own any Nikon glass.I have a Tamron 24-135 and the Sigma 70-300.
These serve me well for what I shoot. If I ever get into shooting sports events outdoors or inside then I would have to get better glass and I don't see that in my tea leaves. My SB800 makes up for my short comings in not having fast glass.

Anyway good luck with what ever you decide.
