I have both the 80/200 F2.8 and the new 70/200 VRIFED. The former has been a mainstay for wedding photography and portraiture for 10 years, is of superb build quality, and I can no reason tofault the lens. It works fine with the D70 but finding a good one 2nd hand is getting harder now. Do remember of course that it effectively becomes a 120/300 on the D70.

I can't fault it either. I recently sold my 80-200AFD, but it gave brilliant results with my D70, D100, D1, D1x etc. Never got to use it on my D2x, but I still have the 80-200AFS version and use this all the time on the D70 now. The AFD lens is just as good in terms of image quality as the AFS version and I find it hard to fault at all (mine was the older one-ring model, bought new around 1989).
