I just got a Nikon D50 with D70s kit lens. I'm looking to geta 80-400mm zoom telephoto with VR/OS for wildlife/landscape shooting. I can get the lens below for $1,200 after rebate if I buy before 2006. I can also get a Sigma 80-400mm EX OS DG APO anytime I want for $1000. Which should I buy and when? Also, will either work well on a D50?

As I recall, the Nikon 80-400 is a bit of a hunter as far as focusing speed. I haven't tried a D50, but I imagine the relative slowness of the lens focusing would be more pronounced on a camera like the D50. I don't know much about that Sigma, so I couldn't tell you if it is a faster focuser or not.

I have the Nikkor 80-400 VR on my D70 90% of the time. Very pleased with it. Although it might hunt abit, you have to remember that's a lot of glass to move around.

I agree with barracuba. Shooting wildlife the 80-400mm is on my camera about 90% too. Working at a camera store I do like the Sigma brand with it's metal mounts and duability. But with this high price of a lens go with the nikkor.

I have had the Nikkor 80-400VR on my D50 99% of the time for several months before I have my Micro-Nikkor 60mm. Now I still have the 80-400 on the D50 most of the time. If I do not shoot macroI would glue the 80-400VR to the D50!

As for focussing speed I found the 80-400VR works very well with the D50. I believe the focussing motor of the D50 is superior than those in D100 and D70.
