I see a lot of posts about Nikon 'pro' lenses. How do I tell which lenses are 'pro' versus 'amateur'? Is price the only indicator or do they have a special number or what??? This is probably a really dumb question but I honestly don't know.

Nikon and Canon's high end lenses are very pricey. So yes, in a way you could say that price does play the big factor. All high end lenses use the best glass and metal lens bodies. But not all high end pro lensesoffer resistance (notwater proof)towater and dust.

When looking in Nikon product books, the high end lenses are marked NAS and the otherlevel of lenses are marked NCP.

You will find it in Nikon product catalloge. Ask to look at one at a Nikon specailty shop. They will give youa catalloge. From what I was told NAS stands for Nikon Advanced Systems , and NCP stands for Nikon Consumer Product.
