I'm looking for a budget telephoto lens and wondering if there are people out there who've used the Tamron 70-300 LD Di Macro (or non-Di).

How does it compare to the Sigma APO DG Macro that others have recommended, and the Nikon version.

The Nikon version is available for $100 (grey market) and it's really tempting and may be worth the risk, considering it won't be a walk-around lens.

Thanks.

I've used the Tamron and the Nikon. Both were bulky (the tamron was bigger) slow focusing, and quite soft over 200mm. I ended up getting rid of both, and getting an 80-200 f/4.5. It's also fairly inexpensive (around $100 used), has better build quality, lighter, focuses faster and is fairly sharp. Unless you absolutely need the extra reach (the difference between 200 and 300 is not as big as you would think) I would avoid these lenses.

I have no experience with the Sigma, but would expect similiar performance and quality.

How large is the difference, exactly, between the 300mm and the 200mm? I've been looking for sample pictures, but I can't seem to find any.

You're right, the difference is not that much:

I assume you're talking about the discontinued manual focus Nikon 80-200 f/4.5?
I haven't considered non-AF lens. But I'll look into this. Nikon also makes an f/4 version, which I guess is newer, but also discontinued. I also found the discontinued 70-210 f/4-5.6 D which is priced a lot more than these.

Thanks for your help.

No, there is an Af 80-200. It is discontinued, but can be found on KEH, or other retailers who sell used items. Thom Hogan has a good review of this lens on his site, www.bythom.com. His is a good site, and he is a bit more credible and less flamboyant than Ken Rockwell

Are you talking about the variable aperture 80-200 4.5-5.6 D?

Or is there a fixed aperture 80-200 f/4.5 that I can't seem to find anywhere?

Thanks.

Personally, I really like my Tamron 28-200 XR (IF) Zoom. Took it on vacation a few weeks ago and I liked the results. It's easy and quick to focus on my Nikon D50, and gives me good reach and some wide to boot. The 28 is more like a 35mm on a 35mm camera.
