Default lenses

My first digital camera......Nikon 4500
My question is about adding lenses.
I know there are Nikon teleconverters but can you use standard SLR lenses such as Nikon 28-80mm or 70-300mm?
If so what kind of picture quality could you expect....would they work like a zoom lens?
I only ask because I always see cheap used lenses in pawn shops.

thanks.

The answer is NO. The reason is very simple. SLR lenses focus the image on the film plan (or image sensor), while front-mounting converter lenses for non-interchangeable lens digital cameras are afocal systems (i.e., lenses without focal points). To use a SLR lens on the 4500, one must convert it to an afocal system. The easiest way is the use of Nikon's scope adapter. Unfortunately, the exit pupil of Nikon's scope adapter is too small, and, as a result, vignetting is serious. Another way of to mount your SLR lens reversely on the camera for macro shooting. However, the two lenses you mentioned are not good for this purpose.

The necessary accessories to do the latter can be found on the "It All Start with Thread Size and Rings" page in the "Filters" section, and the "TC-E2 for Close-Up" page in the "Odd Stuffs" section. Both are in my 4500 user guide.
