Default Nikon 4500 question...

I'am newbee to this forum and digital photo too. Nikon is my first digicam. I have no experience with fotography (both digital and analog) at all (only 2 days :-).
My question is: what I am doing wrong with my cam? Look at my Nikon page http://www.pbase.com/arra/macros and picture DSCN0175.JPG. Face of my kid is a little blurry.

Default Missed Focus...

What has happened in this photo is that you correctly framed the image giving your son a nice space in front of him (so that he is not centered in the frame) but in doing so, the camera focused on the chain-link fence rather than on his face.

The way to "correct" this in future shots is to set the camera to focus at half shutter rather than continuous autofocus, center the subject and depress the shutter half way thus setting auto white balance, exposure and focus. While still holding the shutter down half way which "locks" in the settings - re-frame the picture (move the camera to get desired frame) then press the shutter.

By doing it this way, the subject will be in proper focus and things beyond the depth of field will be soft focused.

Best regards,
