Default 5700 focus

I would like some opinions on the 5700 focus. My own seems so terrible I am using more and more manual focus ,,, an awkward procedure in this camera!

Steve, I'm not used to manual shooting (I'm learning it now). I've been an auto-focus, point 'n shoot gal for about 10 years. So, I'm comparing my experience with my old, cheapo Pentax 35 mm (I paid about $200 for it in 1992) with my new 5700. I think the auto focus works ok. I've even been able to pull of some macro shots that I was very pleased with -- even though I'm not a pro, I am pretty picky. I'm sure that there are alot of folks out there that will agree with you, that the auto focus should be better, but from my (lack of ) experience, I think it's pretty good.

One macro that I shot is for an eBay sale, of a loose gem I'm selling, about 4.5 mm in diameter. Some will say that there are problems with the image, but for my purposes, it turned out great. All done with auto settings (with the factory settings) using the macro.

There were other macro shots I was NOT happy with (I felt there was alot of pixel noise-- blotchy and just plain butt-ugly).

Not very helpful, I know! Just my two cents...

Default 5700 autofocus vs. fuji 4900

So far the zoom and resolution of the 5700 blow away that of my fuji 4900, but as for the auto focus the fuji is both faster and more accurate especially in low light. You can't see anything in the viewfinder of the fuji either but at least they come out clear.

Focus in bright light is quick and responsive.
In poor light its hit & miss.
Very disappointed with the manual focus, although I understand the "next" firmware update will address some of the m/f issues.
I have had four digital cameras, they all suffer from the low light focus problem, maybe Nikon should look at some kind of auto-focus assist, like Sony.

Default manual focus

I agree with most posted comments, however the last one about the manual focus is the one I find the most frustrating. I find it awkward and time consuming.

The ring arund the lens needs to be imitated by Nikon.
