Default Nikon 5700 & external light sources...need some help, pl

I'm having great difficulty setting up my 5700 with an external power pack. I just bought a Wein Safe-sync and I just cannot for the life of me get it to pop my lights. I've tried to understand the manual to no avail, reading the section on external speedlights several times. The Wien and my PC cord are fine, as I've tried them with my non-digital cameras. I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing, as far as menus on the 5700. Please, if anyone can help me to set up my 5700 properly, I would be grateful. Thanks

Since you didn't mention the settings you used, all I can say is that the instructions on page 138 of the manual work for me.
I keep the POPUP on Manual, Speedlight control to Auto. To use external flash push the flash button on the side of the camera until the internal flash pops up. Make sure that you sync cord is not preventing the popup from opening fully. To solve this problem you can turn the wein safe sync around and have cord on the back side. When you shoot only the external flash will fire. Aperature has to be set manually based on flash unit guide no. or auto setting on flash unit.
