Default 4500 Depth of Field

I like to take a lot of portrait shots and am used to a very shallow depth of field (6 inches) on my Nikon SLR, especially at a wide open f-stop and telephoto. At this setting the subject is nicely focussed while the background is completely blurred - very nice effect.

I can't seem to replicate these circles of confusion (except in macro mode). Is the 4500 lens too slow for this?

I read somewhere that the f-stop on a digicam is similar to the focal length, in that there is a 35mm equivalent. So a 2.6 to 5.1 digicam f-stop has a 35 mm equivalent f-stop of something like 10.4 to 20.4. Please tell me it's not true.

Has anyone taken portraits of the type I describe?
