Default d3100 loud bass distortion

Is there any way to adjust the audio from the microphone so it doesnt distort which sound is too loud? for instance, I am a DJ and take video, the sound is distorted when I play the videos back because I am very close to a speaker which is loud.

The first thing the videographer said at a recent class/meeting, was to use a REAL microphone, with monitor head/earphones, 'cuz you need to know what you're recording, right? And use a pre-amp with level controls.
