So confused.

Any Nikon TTL compatible flash can be used with the 8700. Popular ones include the SUnpak series and Sigma series. See here:
Nikon: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...14&Submit.y=10
Sigma: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=15&Submit.y=8
Sunpak: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...17&Submit.y=10

You have to make sure what this flash will be used for. If you need high power output, by larger ones. If you have a plan to upgrade to a Nikon DSLR (e.g., D70), buy the SB800 (high power) or SB600.

You don't need a very fancy and feature-rich flash because Coolpix cameras do not recognize most of those fancy features. See the External Flashes section of my 5700 user guide for more details.
