Default Convert RAW to Tif in the 8700 camera-- any advantage??

I just read in the manual that You can shoot A RAW format picture and then convert it in the camera to A Hi tif format picture . I can't understand any advantage to doing this. Why not just shoot in the Hi format which is Tif anyway? Will the camera automaticaly adjust the white balance Etc. or can You handle it another way? Anybody have any information? Steve, are You out there?
