They added a focus assist lamp on the 8700 and increased the megapixels. I have heard mixed reviews on the effectiveness of the assist lamp. Have also heard that cramming eight megapixels into the sensor has upped the noise on the images. I am very happy with my 5700, which I have had for about 18 months now, it's a great camera if you understand its limitations. Considering the higher price of the 8700, I would be reluctant to buy one, considering the D70 is not that much more money and is a whole lot more camera. So I would either get a 5700 or go for the D70.

I also say get the 5700. I love mine to death. Just saw Les Paul in NYC, and my shots were great. Of course I had to touch up the brightness with Nikon View, but dang they look great. With the great rebate on the 5700 and cheaper price overall, it is the way to go. Plus at 400 ISA the 5700 takes better pictures.

hdshp, ask yourself which is more important - image quality, image size, or a mix of both? The 5700 seems to have better image quality, but the 8700 can shoot a larger image. Most people do not need an 8 megapixel camera - I know I don't - so, I say get the 5700. I have one, and I've used every function on it extensively. It's a fantasic camera.
