Hi,

I saw today Nikon released about 5 new models in the CoolPix series. Any idea why none of them have any manual features like shutter speed / aperture control?
Is it the underlying theme of CoolPix to make it simple and remove all controls from user?

With their impressive list of auto modes, if they had manual options also...it would have been great.

Thanks,
Kaz.

Yep - the majority of buyers want cameras that are simple to use and take good pictures. Look at most people's advanced digicams, I bet the mode dial is on "P" or Auto most of the time. And I don't know anybody that ever uses those multitudes of scene modes either. Turn it on, point, shoot!

If you want advanced features then you need to look at Coolpix 8400, 8800 or D70.

Of course! That is because the "P" stands for "purrretty" mode. :blah:

Thanks a lot Steve !!

Those models are a bit pricey. I am now debating between the canon a510/a520, sony dsc-v1/p200 which seem to have quite a set of manual controls in a compact size. Since 510 is only 200$ its very tempting but then again only 3MP! If I rarely take prints will 3MP be sufficient?

Thanks a lot!
Kaz.

ps hey steve, a great job with maintaining such a wonderful site!

A-ha, this explains the $200 rebate on my 5400. Bottom line cost: $210. Not a bad upgrade price from the 775. Alas, I'm always a year or three behind the bleeding edge...

I've said it many times, 3 megapixels is all that -most- people need. Unless you have a need to make prints bigger than 8x10" or expect to do a lot of cropping. However, if torn between the A510 and A520, I'd go A520 for the little extra $$ it costs.

hey steve,

little extra $$ ? A520 is a 100$ more than A510. A510 while at 200$ , A520 is 300$ just for upgrading from 3MP to 4MP?

just noticed you are from florida....you must be going to the PMA event?
