Default Infrared on Nikon CP950

i understand that you can do infrared pics on the 950 by using a #87 wratten filter.

do i need to set the camera to black & white first.

also, where can you purchase these gel fileters? i saw one on B&H photo at almost $40 with s&h...are there any cheaper sources??

thanks in advance

Wratten #87 glass filters are pricey but I find them a lot less troublesome than a gelatin filter. I started with gelatin and quickly changed to glass filter from B&H Photo.
You don't have to change to B&W. You might want to try maximum sharpness setting. I instead postprocess with Photoshop.
I shoot infared with a coolpix 5700
at ISO 100 and somewhere between 4 -8 seconds time exposure.
check out the following link: http://bermangraphics.com/coolpix/990irgallery.htm
They discuss infared with the 950 and 990 on this web page.

thanks for the info. i will start out with a gel to see if its something i would like to dabble with. i suppose i will be limited to bright outdoors shots, but that will be ok here in sunny florida..(except today, its raining cats and dogs)
