I recently picked up a Nikon external flash (for bounce lighting) and I can't seem to get my 4500 to fire it without the flash (a Nikon SB50dx) being in slave mode.
I know I should be able to turn off the internal (built in) flash on the camera and still have the external flash fire, but it just won't. It will work as a slave to the internal flash, even without the cable connection (in wireless mode). But the purpose I bought the flash for won't happen.
I've tried all the various camera modes that should work. And have set the flash in both TTL and Manual modes with the same result. Should I consider the possibility that my camera is not functioning properly? Even though it has worked flawlessly so far, this is the first time I've tried an external non slave flash with it.
I suppose there is also the possibility that the cable is not working, since firing in slave mode isn't really using the cable but the triggering of the internal flash.
