hello, i'm a newbie at digital cameras. Thinking of buying a Coolpix S1 or a Sony DSC W5. I know that a USB 2 connectivity is faster at downloading from camera to Computer as compare to USB 1. But if comparing with a Card Reader to USB 2, which is faster? And if viewing videos on TV thru video Out Port, is there any time transfer difference. Can I view still photos taken on TV thru this Video Out Port. Thanks in advance for any replies or advice offered.

Nikon S1 has USB 2.0, listed on their site. It also has a video out... which doesn't "transfer" anything, just shows a video signal like a DVD player. Meaning that what you see on the LCD of the S1 will be what you see in realtime on the TV screen.

Not all USB 2 devices transfer at the same speed. 480mbit is the highest speed on the USB 2.0 spec, but that just means that it will be faster than 40mbit USB 1, but the camera might transfer at 200mbit and the card reader might transfer at 380mbit, etc. Or they might both transfer at the highest possible 480mbit USB 2.0 spec. But doubtful. Most USB 2.0 devices do not transfer at the highest range of the USB 2.0 spec. Either way it will be faster than USB 1, but you will have to test to see if your specific USB 2 card reader is as fast or faster than the S1. Though since the S1 has a dock, seems silly to use a card reader for a little more speed, unless you are in a huge hurry and have a 2 gig SD card. Otherwise even if there was a difference in speed between the dock and your card reader, the time difference would not be worth not using the convenient docking cradle.

Also, I can't stand protruding lenses on compact cameras, so I would have to recommend the S1 over the Sony DSC W5. Or the Sony T33 over the Sony DSC W5.
