Default Battery problem on CP990

Recently, I've been having some battery problems on a CP990 that I've had for a few years. Within seconds (less than 10) of inserting batteries, even brand new ones, it will claim that the batteries are low. I know battery life in most digital cameras is short, but not quite this short...

Is there anything I can check before looking for repair shops?

Thanks!

Why not try downloading the newest firmware ? Sound like a softwareproblem.

You are using rechargeable NiMH type batteries right? Alkaline type won't get very far but even so they should not show up as "low" if they're new.

I also agree that you should try updating the camera firmware if it isn't the latest that's available already. However, you have to have a constant power supply to update firmware and if you're having battery troubles then you'll need to use the AC adapter. If you lose power during a firmware update you can turn the camera into a doorstop and it will have to go to Nikon for service.
