I have had a 990 and an oly 3040z for a couple years. The other day I noticed that at the highest settings with out going to tiff the oly file size on disk was 2 meg and the 990 was about 1 meg.

Nikon was no help. I think it may be the rate of compression.

At any rate I bought a 4500. After setting it to the highest setting without going to tiff the file size on disk is 1.2 to 1.3 meg!

I went from 3 to 4 megapixels and there is only that much difference?

What is the file sizes of the 5700 and 8800?

I've got the 8800, and found this link very valuable (Scroll down, about half way, to find the table with the resolution, and the quality):

A lot of things effect image size, not just the resolution and quality, but this will give a good indication. And, from my experience with the camera, it's pretty accurate.

The 8800 has a lot bigger file sizes per picture relative to the 990 and 4500.

I also looked up the 4500 and oly 4040z. The 4500 gets 9 pictures per 16mb cf card where the 4040z gets 5! At 9 per 16mb that would roughly be 1.7 mb per pic. From what I have seen they aren't that big. The Oly would be about 3.2 mb per pic.

I don't understand why they applied so much compression (?) to the 990 and 4500.

It would be nice to be able to do larger prints than what the 990 and 4500 seem to be able to do.
