I just went to purchase one online only to find it has been discontinued. I wanted the zoom capability. Does anyone have any credible info on when a replacement will be released? Is there an alternative, 10X zoom?

I have no idea about a replacement for the Nikon 8800. However, from the main page of this website, you can reach a list of "The BEST Cameras." The list has a section for "10-12X Optical 'Super' Zoom" cameras. I tried only a few of those cameras before purchasing my 8800, but I thought the Sony Cybershot H1 was the best of the lot, all factors considered. Of course, your tastes and needs may vary, so check the reviews yourself, go to various brick-and-mortar shops to test out their display models (bring some storage media so you can take the photos home for review), etc.

Check out the Panasonic FZ 30. 12X zoom. 8MP, Switch to the 5MP setting, goes to 19X zoom, switch to 3 MP setting, goes to 23X zoom. And it's image stabilized. (sweet)
