Default Help with Taking Photos

Ok, I have had this Nikon Coolpix 5000 for a year and I still cannot take pictures with it! I also have the 50dx flash. When I try to take pictures, it's 90% over exposed. My old olympus never had this problem... just aim and shoot. Granted this Nikon is much powerful but why is it so difficult to take pictures? I problaby just don't know what I am doing... so many settings. Any tips would be appreciated. I will be taking a nikon digital 101 class next month but I really need to take some pictures asap.

I believe the sensor is close to the finger grip on the CP5000 and you could be blocking it when taking picture hence the overexposure since the camera was fooled into not having enough light!

Just to follow-up... I didn't have the speedlight option set! Pictures are not coming out beautifully!
