The D100 cannot be used with the color LCD as a monitor - this is the #1 battery draining item on consumer digicams. I rarely see anyone using the optical viewfinder if the digicam has a color LCD on it. With cameras like the Nikon Coolpix line, when the LCD is on the autofocus is continuous so this eats even more power. The D100 is made to shut off the power consuming electronics as quickly as possible after every shot.
The D100, D30, D60 and the new 10D have the best battery life of any camera I have ever used. It's just amazing how long they go without charging. Another thing to remember is that all of these cameras use lithium packs and they hold a charge much longer than NiMH when just sitting around.
