And don't forget that you can stick a one-use 2CR5 type battery in any Coolpix that uses the EN-EL1 pack. I know 2CR5 aren't cheap but it is an alternative in the case that your only EN-EL1 goes dead. I always carry a 2CR5 in my bag with my Coolpix 995.

That's true, and it cost about the same (@ slightly less power) for a throwaway than a set of reusable NiMH...

The only explanation that I can think of is Nikon must be making money on the LiIon or something ...ie just look @ the generic market developping for theses proprietary battery types.
