My Nikon uses according toits nanual CF cards 512 Mb. The question is if I use a 1Mb CF or2Mb Microdrive what will hapen. Is the camera able to format cards of higher capacities?

Your CP 8700 supports microdrives up to 4GB according to Hitachi.

I'd probably avoid some drives (for example Magicstor), as they have been know to cause problems in some cameras. Hitachi is probably your best bet in a microdrive versus solid state media.

You also need to be careful that the microdrive you choose is CompactFlash compliant. Some users have found out the hard way that many drives in MP3 players are not CF compliant (trying to remove them because the price was less expensive that way).

Well, at least here in Europe price difference between 4GB Hitachi microdrive and Transcend 120x card is so small (~10%) that I would take solid state memory over mechanical device operating at very small tolerances any day.
Actually in 2GB capacity Transcend is already considerably cheaper.

A 2 GB Sandisk compact flash card works perfect in the 8700. I'm sure a 4GB sandisk would do the same. The Ultra II cards are now affordable .
