I agree with the power adapter problem. You should never use the ac/dc adapter. It's so easy to mess up the camera'scontact points. When that happens, no battery juice will get to the camera, no matter how many times you change batteries. I'm surprised how many camera owners are not aware of this.

The component you are referring to is most likely a capacitor. My D550 quit with power on problems and during the troubleshooting I ran across your posting. I removed the compent similar to yours and found it is a capacitor. The value on mine is 5.5 volt, 0.01F. Hope this helps.
