I'm not really qualified to answer this as i don;t have the E500 or the 50-200 + tele convertor. However, I do know that the 50-200 is a very good tele lens and in a recent tele zoom test in a UK magazine beat the nearest Canon L IS and Nikon VR glass in terms of IQ, faster apertures, smaller size/weight and price - the 50-200 was at 700GBP compared to approx 1200GBP for both the Canon and Nikon glass. The only thing that its missing is IS and thats it.
