Here's a few 100% crops taken with the E1+14-54 just to show how much detail and when I can get it right sharp the images can be (taken in RAW and converted to JPG+slight USM):

1. The owls: and here's a 100% crop of the owl in the centre of the frame: ISO200 [email protected]/8s (54mm=108mm)

2. Tiger - shot taken behind glass. ISO 400, [email protected] 1/100s (50mm=100mm)

3. That red bird: ISO200 f6.3 @1/250s (54mm=108mm)

4. Lions - taken behind glass: ISO100 f7.1 @1/100s (44mm=88mm)

5. The Pelican - here's an example where I thouht I should have had the same level of detail as the other shots but didn;t. ISO 200 f7.1 @1/500 (FL 54mm=108mm)

Wow, that is a great lens!

Hi Jorgen,

Its a very good lens from what Ican tell - just need to know how to get the best out of it. Pricewise its very competitive with the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is about $400.00 while the Oly is 440.

Here's one more of the lioness at the zoo : ISO100 [email protected]/125s (54mm=108mm)

So I think I know what I did wrong with that Pelcian shot - I basically undexposed it by at least 1 stop. If I had taken it at say 1/125 or 1/250 the chances are that it would have been (fingers crossed) as sharp as these. I just have to work on consistently get this right but then again I was also under teh impression that the faster teh shutter speed the shaper the shot - which would also mean I would have had to have used a faster aperture as well  .

$440 for the 14-54 ? Where is that price ??

I checked the prices on

- ZD 14-54 for £449
- Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for £268.99

If 14-54 costs 440 USD I'd buy it straight off .... but it doesnt ... :(

Hi Gaggu

I bought mine from Cameta camera NY as they had them for $440 or $449 and I couldn;t find the 14-54 here in the UK (everyone seemed to be out of stock at the time) and I didnt fancy paying £449. They have an excellent service and I got the lens within 5 workign days.

the firts and last (in your first pic) are much worse than the other ones.
Maybe the E-1 N.R. algorithm selectively acts on luminance noise and it tends to smooth the underexposed darker areas. Thus the owl black plumage and pelican's UE feathers have lost details.

Great lens, sharpness and colors , at least at these small apertures (except for Tiger's hair)
