50-200mm w/CPL?

I just attempted to put a CPL on the 50-200mm & EC-20. I was surprised that it wouldn't focus properly. It gets close but not QUITE there. Anyone else experience this?

Well this is just to follow up in case anyone else had a similar problem. My problem was aparently a bad copy of the Hoya CPL. I just bought a B+W multi-coated CPL which works beautifully. No more issues. It cost a lot more than the Hoya, but I guess a bargain that didn't work wasn't really a bargain, was it?
Thanks to everyone for the help."

Hi Steve

Thats a good find.. i was thinkign it just might be the filter causing the problem and from that post it looks as if it is .

Another test to confirm would be to use a UV filter on the 50-200 and see if the problem is still there. With the Hoya filters, I only ever get the SHMC pro's after reading a thread on photo.net a few years ago regards filters and impact on IQ.

Cheers

Well, crap! This one is a Tiffen but obviously not in the realm of usability with the 50-200mm. Oh, well! :(

HarjTT Mar 17, 2011 3:37 PM

Hey Gary

Have you tried the filter on another lens ? Tiffen filters are usually pretty good so I'm a wee bit surprised that its effecting the 50-200. Might want to clean both the lens and the filter and see if that helps.

B+W always seemed to be the best brand and as always theyre a wee bit more spendy than the other brands. The Hoya Super HMC Pro's have had a pretty good rep as well.

Cheers

Works just fine on my 14-54mm, Harj. Thanks!

Hi Gary,

For what it's worth, I've tried using a CPL on my 50-200mm ED both with an EC20 and alone. My experience was that it was very erratic and, at times, refused to focus.

I've never pursued finding a solution as I think I can replicate whatever affects I want in pp anyway.

I agree, Zig. I don't know how much heavy reflective stuff I'll be shooting -- mainly water surface -- but, it'd be nice to have it for that.

Hi Gary

May be worthwhile emailing Olympus support and see what they have to say ? Its pretty odd that both you and Zig, plus other 50-200 owners cant use a CPL filter with the lens.
