From what I can see here, the answer is "carefully, from behind a fence".

That's pretty cool. It must have been used to being petted - it didn't retract into the shell.

Hi Ted: It follows the rule of "don't bite the hands that feed you." that hand belongs to one of the animal keepers. They give them all names, and can tell you the age and weight of each one. I think this one was a relative youngster at 85 years old.

The bigger ones don't that I remember as a kid retract much they use to have turtle rides at the ZOO and other places..
