can i use this flash with an e-500?

it is a vivitar zoom thyristor 285, unknown what year produced, made in japan.

can i use it on hotshoe? or do i need a trigger?

Since no answer so far: I assume you haven't received the camera yet: you can find the e-500 manual here and check out the chapter about "alien" flashes http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/...wnload/manual/

See the following for trigger voltages:

Note that there's a Vivitar 285 and 285HV!

it is an 285 not hv, made in japan model.

from what i gather i need the wein adapter to be safe.

after the camera arrives, probably may 1st or 2nd, i will probably get one.

i am going to test the voltage this weekend also.

thanks.

i wouldnt use the vivitar. i have tried a vivitar flash on other dslr but images came out either over exposed or under(manual mode)

It's not limited to Vivitar...in that case it would be user error. You can't always use TTL flashes...many times I'll use monolights in a portrait shot, and in those cases you have no TTL or automatic...you have to use a light meter and adjust the camera accordingly.
