A few samples with the 50-200SWD + EC20 teleconverter

I didn't have any time at the end of the day to get outside and try to find something really interesting, so I attempted a few shots using the view from the windows of our offices 8 floors up.

The first thing I was seeing, and knew I would see....this combination, even with image stabilization, needs high shutter speeds due to the extreme magnification. Here, I was using ISO 800 to keep the shutter speeds up. These were all shot RAW and processed in Adobe Camera RAW.

If you click on any of these images, they open up in my website where they are loaded at their original size if you want to either enlarge from there or download to take an even closer look.

I took a few wider shots to try and give some scale to the images shot with the 50-200 at 200mm with the EC20 to try and show how extreme this setup can go. First, here's a shot using the 12-60 Zuiko at 49mm and my E620..

Concentrate here on that copula atop the one building near the center, and then the outdoor deck area of the building in the back left atop the building with the exterior fire escape. These next two images were shot using the 50-200 at 200mm with the EC20 a couple of windows over from where I shot with wider image.

If you look at the base of the building in the center with the little domed copula, there's an intersection. I moved a couple of windows down to reveal more of that intersection and shot this. Enlarged, the license plates are clearly readable.

Moving a little to the left and re-mounting the 12-60, I shot this at 49mm..

Note the billboard in the center of the image and the buildings in the far, far background, miles off...

Even those little banners to the left of the billboard are easily read.

In the image below, all of this is so far away it has that hazy, blurry look you see at great distances, yet you can come very close to making out the FedEX Kinkos sign on the high rise, which is part of a complex near the Dallas Galleria, which is several miles north from downtown. Very impressive.

Next sample image, again shot with the 12-60 at 49mm. Note the street sign and white sign on the building near the center of the image..

Last sample, shot at 49mm with the 12-60 Zuiko. Note the white dish between the two towers.

This looks like quite an excellent combination to me.

........yep, and you are going to go nuts having fun with it too, along with maybe causing Zig, Harj, Ted, Greg(the other) me and possibly others to start with that craving feeling. How do you hold that steady enough to make those crystal clear/sharp images.

The sampling above is impressive......... thanks for the quick look.

BTW, here is more air show info if you've not seen it http://www.allianceairshow.com/Home.aspx
......... could be a day for lots of CF card storage

Thanks, Bob.

In shooting these, I pressed the hood up against the window to help steady the outfit as I shot and used the IS1 setting.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for taking the time to take all these comparison shots and then posting them for us to see the impact of the EC-20 has on focal length.
Your right it appears to be an excellent addition to the 50-200mm without negatively affecting IQ.

And yes Bob, It does want to cause me to pick one up..

Zig

P.S. Can't wait for your Air Show pics!

Hi Zig.

I was thinking about the same thing regarding shooting at the air show. You guys will be the first ones to see.

I'm headed out of town this morning for a couple of days. About 15 minutes after I clicked the "purchase" button on the EC20 my mother called to tell me my grandmother passed away, so I'm headed back to Wichita Falls (about 150 miles north of here) for the funeral tomorrow.

I'll be back in Dallas Friday so may not be around to make any comments here for a couple of days.
