Yes, I know the 50-200 is not a macro lens.

However, just because it is not a macro, it still is an excellent all around lens.

Quite whimsical, I like it. Skinny DOF but crisp where you need it.

Got to stay with my 70-300 for a while yet. Conflicting hobbies, sailing and Photo shooting.

Nice, I did something similar with my E-520 but 14-42mm kit lens at the Singapore zoo the other day. A small dragon fly of some type caught me eye while wandering between animal exhibits and the stock kit lens got a nice shot...

Question you might be able to answer.
The old verses new 50-200mm F2.8 lenses, does my E-520 use the speed of the SWD fully, or is the older F2.8 lens just as useful to me if I bought one ?

Hello,

I've owned the ED version (Non SWD) of the 50-200mm lens for a few years now first using it with an E-510 and now with an E-30. From an image quality perspective, you wont know the difference between the two. I do believe you would see the difference between the two, in terms of AF speed IF you owned an E-5. Based on many of the posts and comments I've read over the years at other forums i.e. DPReview and Fourthirdsphoto.com your E-520 wouldn't really benefit from using an SWD version. You would be happy with the fact, however, that you would be owning one of the best telephoto lenses Olympus has ever made.

Here is an interesting review of the ED version from SLR Gear.com

I only have the older version so I can't comment on the focus speed difference with the E-5. But the SWD version apparently has a much, much larger lens hood which has the door to rotate a CPL filter (so you're more likely to put a fingerprint on the edge of the filter instead of in the middle of it) but which many folks find a PITA (the size not the door) when trying to find a camera bag to accomodate it.

+1 from me, Steven. Your new camera body and lens seem to have really re-invigorated photography for you. I think that's great!
