Zone10 - Olympus OM D and some historical Context

Ken Norton, over at Zone-10's put together a very interesting piece on Oly's upcoming OM-D:

http://zone-10.com/cmsm/index.php?op...d=672&Itemid=1

" ..........The OM-4(T/Ti) had reached the pinnacle of what they were capable of. Everything after 1984 was a rehash. Ten years ago, the OM system was finally officially killed."

"So, now we have the m43 mount. History tells us that the Pen system was replaced by the OM system (zero system crossover), the OM system replaced by the IS system (zero system crossover--even the hot-shoe changed), the IS system replaced by the Camedia system (zero system crossover--even the hot-shoe changed again), the Camedia system replaced by the Four-Thirds system (very little crossover)..... "

"So, here we are with the OM-D. If you are a short-term buyer/user and will buy whatever is fresh, new and innovative, then I believe the OM-D is the beginning of something worthwhile. But if you are in this for the long-haul, you really need to be very careful in choosing this camera...... "

yeah the ol Ken isnt happy with Oly, I think he feels like he got a bit screwed over. I thought that on balance this was relatively calm progress from him. Its a shame, he was a most ardent supporter.

Makes me think think though, this isnt micro, its another system that can take micro

Every film SLR I've owned became obsolete: Leica IIIf, Konica Autoreflex, Nikkormat, Canon AE-1 Program. Then 35mm film became obsolete. So I'm not sure what he's so upset about - that's what happens as technology progresses. Hell, in today's Canon DSLR world there are at least 3 mounts, which are not interchangeable.

Nikon created the F mount in 1959. What was Olympus doing in 1959? Oh, and you can buy a brand new Nikon film SLR if you want to. I suppose I switched to Nikon because I feared change:D.

Olympus NEEDS to NOT change mounts again, and I don't think they are.

his angst has been continuing and building for some time, and its actually a little painful to watch, you wont get a sense of unless you take the same ride he has

Thanks for taking the time to put those links in. I haven't been following him, which is odd considering how much a kindred spirit he is to me with regards to the L1.

It's certainly true that if I were a pro tog using Olympus I'd be a lot less cavalier about Oly's future direction. With the investment I have in 7mm-100mm SHG glass I certainly am concerned but I don't shoot enough to wear out camera bodies very quickly. I'm more concerned about what I think is the eventual disappearance of OVFs since I'm skeptical that there will be enough of an effort to raise EVF quality to where it needs to be. But maybe Oly will prove me wrong on February 8.
