I use an Olympus FL-C805 cable to marry my E-330 to an FL-36 flash.
Last week the cable quit working. The flash will still operate on camera
but it fails to communicate if using the cable. Strangely, it worked on one
frame and quit on the next.

I have "erased" the connections on the cable. I have verified that the flash is
set to "off-hotshoe". I have verified connections through the cable via an ohmmeter.

My question is "Just how fragile are these cables?" Aside from continuity through
the cable and lack of shorts between contacts, what else is there to check.

I use my flash off-camera more than on-camera but I can't buy a new cable every
month.

It may not be either. Maybe something in the camera or flash is damaged. Have you definitely isolated the problem to the cable? If not, take the camera and flash to a camera shop and see if the flash works with a new cable. If it does, then you know your cable is bad, and hopefully still under warranty. If it doesn't, then you know it's either the camera or the flash. Next switch out either the camera or flash with its working counterpart at the camera shop. By switching out your components with new ones and testing them you will eventually isolate the problem.

The FL-36 worked on the hot shoe of my C-770 as well as my E-330.
Once the FL-CB05 was added to the mix, there was no flash.

Having pretty well isolated the problem down to the cable, I ordered a new one.
(I've not found the Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 any cheaper than the
original Oly)

Regardless, I found the problem. Along with the 4 control wires there is a ground
strap that connects the camera ground to the flash ground.
This lead had been tacked onto a steel plate on the camera end of the cable.
The solder joint had popped loose. I carefully soldered it back on.

The cable now works on my C-770 -- I assume that it will on the -330 as well ----
For now anyway.

Thanks for the response.
