They're making some pretty bold claims. We'll have to see if they are true (or still true) when the camera starts shipping. Isn't competition fun? :-)

"Speed: When coupled with three new ZUIKO DIGITAL Supersonic Wave Driveā„¢ Lenses (SWD) announced today, like the ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 (24-120mm equivalent), the E-3 offers unmatched AF speeds, and the fastest AF speed in the world with that lens. It employs a newly-developed high speed 11-point biaxial cross type AF system, 5 frames-per-second continuous shooting, and 1/8000 second top shutter speed for the quickness required in any shooting situation."

Hi Jim

Yep its fun alright - and I do like what Nikon has down the D300 and Sony with the A700! I'm wondering what Oly would do if its not the world's fastest ?

So, JIm any ideas when you guys are going to test one out, esp with the new lenses ? What I did notice and others as well is the weight of the E3, has shot up by 200g over the E1, so that its practically the same as the equivalent APS-C cameras.

Cheers

I have no idea yet. But, I'm sure it will be a high priority as soon as Olympus ships some production cameras to reviewers for testing.

I also noticed they mentioned the Zuiko 14-35mm f/2 again in the press releases (only this time, it's shown with a Supersonic Wave Drive System). So, perhaps that was the big delay with this lens (revamping the AF mechanism with newer technology).

They'll have some tough competition for sure. I just got a Sony DSLR-A700 for personal use to replace my Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D. It's a super camera. So, if Olympus can surpass the newer models from Nikon and Sony (Nikon D300, Sony DSLR-A700), they're to be applauded.

Of course, the Nikon D300 and Sony DSLR-A700 are not those manufacturers' "pro" models. The Nikon D3 will also be shipping soon, and Sony has already announced that they'll be releasing a flagship camera next year (the A700 is only their advanced amateur model and their pro model is yet to come). They'll cost a lot more than the E-3, though.

The newer camera models are going to have us all spoiled. :-) Now, if we could just get all of the manufacturers to lower prices even more... lol

P.S.

Olympus has some nice flash presentations and interviews with testers of preproduction E3s on this page:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/e3/

It looks like it's going to be a pretty nice camera.

it seems something goes on between Askey and Oly over t the other place
apparently Askey has been told he wont be getting an E3 for review
Askey says as much in a thread over there

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=25235554
Actually we were told via Olympus UK by Olympus Tokyo that we would not be getting a camera

not really ture about the review. He was referring to a pre-production test model. It's obvious they are very short supply and they, like many sites were shunned. I'm not surprized as they have't even reviewed the e510 over there (they are slow and inconsistent with the timing of their reviews).

What I'm reading around the net from the people that did receive test models is that the e3 is the most technically advanced SLR yet released and that the focus is blazing on the new 12-60, but there are no procedures set up to test focus speed anyways. Reviewers will have to get a proces in place if that is something they would want to benchmark.

actually, PopPhoto have an AF test regime and they measure noise, a
lthought their noise measurement system is pretty well debunked by Ken Rockwell

Hi Jim,

I am sure you are impartial. I am sure you look at all equipment as if it were new to you. I am sure you are not sponsored by anyone!

But, I can not grasp the slow respons of realy heavy critics in the Olympus threads. Sure, nobody is sponsoring you, and you are not dictated by anyone. Please, make me believe you are independent! I a m sorry, but I feel some bias. I wish to be wrong.

Terpentijn.
