Default ....invasion of the green munchers

Every year I plant a bed of Penta to attract butterflies, we've been rewarded with many including the Monarch and lots of other colorful ones. A Giant Swallowtail that measured approx 6" across it wings stopped by one afternoon last year and it followed that a monstrous caterpillar, approx 5 inches in length showed later to devour a huge quantity of green Penta growth.

Well, this year I again put 20 Penta plants in the bed and they are/were just now putting bloom masses and showing really great color, the leaves are/were a very vibrant green ..... as in WAS, WERE, B4 the invasion of the caterpillars approx 3 inches. Does anyone recognize the caterpillar for butterfly species? I will likely be replacing this Penta stand soon, so far I've counted 11 of of the 'munchers'.

......here're a couple photos from the E-3 & 50-200

I can remember, as a kid (!), pulling those things off my mother's plants and using a magnifying glass to burn them up by reflecting the sun onto them!

Boys do, do awful things sometimes....

Growing older is required; growing up is optional!

I think its the caterpillar of a Sphynx Moth. Those are the ones that suck nectar and are about the size of a hummingbird.

.........hey, thanks Greg. With your suggestion I found this, it is a pretty near same match http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3D21%26um%3D1

I have not seen them WORMS since that day, but I am holding off replacing the half dozen Penta plants they gobbled completely to stems.

It is good to see you posting, thanks for being here.
