Default Dancin' with Claire

"Dancin' On Home" has Northern Dancer and Seattle Slew in her lineage. Despite that, my friend Claire got her just hours before she was going to be executed because she didn't win races. (Like greyhounds, that's what happens to most race horses.) Claire wasn't ready to be a horse owner, but life is funny sometimes.

Claire and a trainer are working with Dancin' to retrain her to be a normal horse, so Claire can ride her. Like stock cars, race horses end up being only able to run fast around ovals, and need their suspension retuned to get back to being a ride-able horse.

Hi Ted,
It's distressing to hear that horses are destroyed if they're not good enough to race. She's a pretty animal.

She is a beauty. Sadly, she only won $32,000 when racing.

PS: Horses aren't easy to photograph - they are constantly moving around. I had originally intended to get a portrait shot of Claire's and Dancin's heads side by side. I didn't realize that no sane person ever, ever, ever places themselves alongside a horse's head. The horse will likely move it's head and if you're lucky you only end up with minor injuries. If it tosses it's head in your direction you probably won't survive. I think the strength of Dancin's neck is what I like about that photo.

I love a good rescue story, and that's a beautiful horse.
