Default Its all about M43

http://www.olympus.co.uk/cameras/

Looking at Oly Uk's webpage .. its clearly all about the PEN and m43. The E5 doesn't even get the main spot..

"The new E-5 – packed with evolutionary features to exploit your talents "

http://www.olympusamerica.com/oai_consumer.asp

It doesn't even make it to the front page on the US site, which says it all.

It all depends on how you enter their system.

When I open the Olympus America site, under the consumer tab quick links there are several options. If you select the Digital SLR cameras, the DSLR page comes up first with the Pens under the second tab. The Pens also have their own dedicated tab, where you would figure they would be up front, but on the left-hand side of the page the DSLR tab is still on top as the upper tier of cameras. The main Olympus America web page is not dedicated to digital cameras at all..

They also have what we know are artificially high (for current US) prices listed out there for the E3 and E30, and a $1,699 price on the E5, which was the beginning price-point I had heard for the US.

I haven't even looked at the Oly site, so I won't even comment on that, but as to what they did with the E-5, its plain as can be.

I'll admit I was in hopes of the square GH-1 sensor. The thought of not needing a grip and shooting vertical with a full height crop would be great!!! Besides, I love square crop photos anyway.

Whatever story Olympus comes up with, the reason they chose the EPL sensor instead was so they didn't have to redesign the prism. There is no desire to spend another nickle on an optical finder. Just the way it is.

Think of the unchanged autofocus system. No R&D for phase detect, no way no how. Their effort is in the contras detect, plain and simple.

All the improvements are from micro 4/3. New 3" display... If I could unplug it from the E-5 and plug it onto the E-PL1, I would in an instant. Its something the micro camera needs badly, so that is a priority that gets included.

The sensor, hand me down. True pic V, hand me down. Art filters, SD card, video.... Hand me down, hand me down, hand me down.

There is zero investment in four thirds. All micro from now on. Get used to it. What you see is what your going to get.

I'll own the E-5 because I own some fantastic glass. The only shortcomming I experience is with the AF tracking, so I'll just have to get by. Its a pity, because they were really close to fulfilling all I needed. Oh well.

I love my E-1 and can deal with the 500 but I'm not sure I'll stick with Oly anymore. With all the old glass i have it might make more sense to switch to Pentax instead of waiting on a good deal on an E-3. Pentax at least uses up to date technology in the cameras they offer.
