Default A firmware upgrade for SWD lenses

Hi All,

Some of you E-3 and E30 owners may want to try upgrading your firmware for your SWD lenses in order to improve C-AF. Here is a link to a post on DPReview discussing the recent firmware upgrades for the 50-200mmSWD and the 12-60SWD lenses.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=36400915

According to the post, the C-AF shows marked improvements.

OK, I have a really stupid question. How do I know if I have an SWD lens - does it say so on the lens? Oly only has three, right? Of those, I have a 14-35 f/2 and the 50-200. I think they only made the 14-35 f/2 as an SWD - is that true? My 50-200 goes back a ways and I'm pretty sure it's the pre-SWD version, but how would I be able to tell?

Yeah, yeah, I'm supposed to know the details of my equipment better...

Yes, the SWD lens has a "gold" SWD logo on it beside the ED logo. Another way to tell is the SWD lens has a blue metal ring where the lens extends out. Of course you could just look at a picture of the two lenses together, the SWD lens is on the left:

Note, your SWD lens (if you indeed have one) may or may not have the 100-400 sticker on it...they started putting those on late in the product cycle to make it easier for novices to compare lenses.

Thanks a lot, Mike. I'll take a look when I get home from work.

I updated both my 12-60 and 50-200 SWD's a couple of nights ago. I'll get a chance to see if it makes a difference this next Wednesday when I go to my last major league baseball game of the season, a 1:05 afternoon game between the Rangers and Mariners. I'll be doing something this weekend and hopefully will get a chance to test it out earlier.

OK - as I suspected my 14-35 f/2 is SWD but the 50-200 is not. Thanks for your help, Mike.

Greg - please let me know what you think about the SWD firmware upgrade when you try it out. Oly firmware upgrades can be quirky (they were for sure on the E-3) and so I've had a policy of not fixing Oly things that aren't broken. But you've got a good handle on lens performance vs. firmware.

Just playing with the E30 and 50-200 SWD, panning around from subject to subject, the continuous AF action is much smoother without much of the "twitching" I used to get where the camera just seemed to be refocusing continually when it didn't seem like it should have been.

I ran by a local street with a body of water where there seems to continuously be birds flying in and out, hoping to catch one or two to see if I could do something constructive shooting birds for a change and, of course, all the larger birds I saw were just sitting there, seemingly waiting for me to leave so they could go on about their business...

E30 and 50-200 SWD with the EC20..

I guess the baseball game this Wednesday afternoon will be my first real extensive chance to see how the upgrade works. Then, after that game....NHL hockey....the real test.

Thanks for your report, Greg - I really appreciate it (one of the firmware updates for the E-3 was a step backwards).

I did the lens firmware upgrade on my only SWD lens - the 14-35 f/2. Then tried the lens in my basement at eV= -0.5 (!). The AF locked right in.

I never had the AF issues with that lens that others reported, which I really believe is related to the fact that I didn't buy the first production run of the E-3. Nevertheless, I do think that quick and accurate AF at eV -0.5 is pretty darned good, and I believe it is an improvement in the firmware.

Hi Greg,
thanks for posting your evaluation. I have yet to upgrade the 12-60mm SWD. But will do that when I get back this Saturday.

I don't have any other SWD lenses- so no benefit for my 50-200mm ED lens.
