Default E-5 The Party is Over

(if there is an ad, i don't endorse it)

Well, Made it to Horicon, but the weather was crap. That's the good news...

Photos follow, and the story.

Another overcast day and I hate silver water. The birds were on edge from hunting season and it was tough getting close. The trip was pretty much a waste.

Now the bad news. I had the dogs with me and decised to go for a short hunt. I had the E-5/300 f2.8/EC-14 hidden under a jacket sitting on the backpack in the back seat. Upon returning home, I opened the door and something rolled out. When it happened, It took about a tenth of a second to put two and two together. It actually put a little puff of powdered concrete into the air. It hit on the lower right of the E-5 and there is a smaller mark on the upper right. That's a lot of mass involved.

What the dogs thought:

Dox: You dumb ass

Rum: Ya, you dumb ass!!!

Rev: Is it time to eat yet????

It looks to me like the lens survived fine. The E-5 suffered some road rash on the corner that hit the ground, but worse than that, it seems that the mount is twisted too. I did take some photos with it, but it did hunt for focus once (first time) and the IQ just didn't seem the same.

I think I should send the lens, converter, and camera in to Olympus for a full check out. I just hope the lens is fine. The E-5 is cheap in comparison. Any words of wisdom for sending stuff to Olympus?

Hi Greg

Ouch .. ouch .. man thats got to hurt. I'm just glad that there wasn;t any further damage but mate, i really feel for you. I think Oly's US/NA service centres from all reports are very good so hopefully the 300F2.8 is aok and there isn;t too much damage to the E-5. Now I've been in touch with Oly UK?europe as I'm about to sne my E3 + 35-100F2 in for a service but as thats all considered Pro grade they won;t give a price on what it might cost. I'm assuming that OLY US will do the same, so you'll have to send camera + lens in for a quote first. I think Greg's had experience of OLY service's in the US so he'd be the best person to check with on that.

Cheers

HArj

PS

The dogs look great !

What an all around crappy day.......

As for what there is to say, I think the dogs said it best.........

Actually, what I mean to say is, what an awful thing to have happened. I would be apoplectic if that happened to me.
I certainly hope that Oly will return it to you as good as new with no delay.

That made me sick just reading about it; I would have been very upset it that happened to me. I hope you get everything fixed quickly without costing too much. Good luck.

Hi Folks,

I guess its just a stupid human trick.

I will say the feeling at the moment I realized what had happened was horror. I was glad to see no broken glass. It could have been much worse.

I might just give the 300mm a workout with the E-3 and call it good if it behaves itself. I'm not sure yet.

I have a gut feeling the E-5 won't be an easy fix. I'm guessing its bent the frame itself up. There are so many things that run through my head. Will the repair compromise the weather seals? Will the alignment be ok afterward? How about the IS unit. Those things aren't designed for that king of impact. Bummer. I may try to talk them into a trade in.

Bet parts aren't in the pipeline yet either.

I let you know how I fare.

I'm with Steven on this, just reading that made me shudder. Hope all turns out well, or as well as can be expected.

What a horrible feeling. Any chance your insurance would cover it?
