Default Happiness is...

... having dad come back from Afghanistan. Charlie is my "adopted son". He flies C-130s and just got back from Afghanistan about 2 hours ago.

Charlie and my "adopted daughter", Miriam.

The whole family -- reunited and REALLY happy to be that way.

Hi Gary,

Not only are the images very nice, this is a heartwarming story.
His smile says it all.

Thanks, Zig. This was the first time to use the Vivitar DF383 with the E620 and 14-54mm in "candid" environment. I love the combination. Some folks snub their nose at the flash but, it really works VERY well. In this instance, I stuck a Omnibounce on it, set the WB for the weird lighting in the hangar, and started shooting. Not being a people photog, I wasn't real sure how they'd turn out.

Great shots of happy people, make for nice prints to hang on to. Hope he's home for a while.
Your flash worked well Gary.

My daughter is entering the Air Force on January 17 as a pilot trainee, with the 10 year committment out of college. The C-130 is what she wants to fly, so you peaked my interest with this post, and the very nice images.

The Vivitar DF383 looks like a very good flash. You certainly cannot complain about the price v. performance basis from what I see here.

Excellent set.

That's a difussor sold by Gary Fong called the Lightsphere.

Thanks, Greg. I took on a different view of that aircraft when I got a chance to fly with Charlie last August. It's a very versatile plane! The AC-130 is absolutely amazing in combat. I have to admire anyone that wants to take one of these up. There's a lot of flight time in the forward areas. Charlie wrote he & crew were normally airborne 12-14 hours a day. So much his hands got numb from the vibration of the plane.

I am so happy with the DF383! The recycle time on it is so freakin' fast compared to what I had with the FL36R! I could never get the FL36R to work the way I assumed it was designed to work. Wireless, to me, means like radio-controlled. That's not what I had with it. It needed light from the cameras onboard flash to operate wirelessly. To me, that's a slave flash and the DF383 will do that as well.

Yup. It sure is. I have the Lambency and I *was* going to take it along. However, as you can see, it's a bit clumsy for quick candid shots. The Air Force photojournalist you see here wound up taking it off and stowing it. He switched to what I was using... Stofen Omnibounce. The Lightsphere, for me, works really well. Just not in that setting.
