I was playing with spot metering with a lot of those shots and was metering for highlights or shadows. One specific example was that grove of trees with the fountain and frogs. The light off the walking path was overly bright, so I spot-metered off the brighter area near the fountain with a +.7 EV compensation to keep those highlights under control.
