Default Green Heron and Little Blue Heron

I went for a short walk on Sunday afternoon before the football games, to a nearby wetland which usually attracts a lot of birds, especially white Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons.

This winter has killed most of the wetland foliage, and there are mainly brown sticks standing in the water instead of green branches. Also, I think all the fish kills in Jan 2010, combined with the hard freezes of last month, have taken a toll on the food chain for the larger birds. I saw only a single GBH and a single great egret.

However, I did see a little Green Heron on a branch hiding in the underbrush. While they are common in Florida, for some reason they are never seen in my neighborhood. It was a treat to actually be able to get a shot of one, even thru the underbrush with all the shadows on him.

I also saw a Little Blue Heron, and was able to get several shots of him waiting for a fish to swim by.

Steven, it would be great if they can survive! Thanks for the photos.
