Default San Javier

Took a trrip to the San Javier (Xavier) mission yesterday. (Circa 1730 and first glass windows in the Americas.) Up in the hills about 25 miles east of Loreto. First half has been newly paved but still a narrow switch backed road that likes to double back on itself. Then it gets plain nasty.

Hardly saw anyone all day and getting to the mission was a big surprize. The road in was wide and cobblestoned. The guy watching over the church said on Dec. 2nd over 2,000 people make the trip up the mountain. That's just scary.
Then from the cross at the end of the courtyard they finish the trip on their knees.

The little chapel is "only" 200 years old, just about half way in.
On the way down we hunted around and found the indian rock paintings from an even older period. Pretty bad shape nowdays.

Thanks for sharing Ken. Interesting shots and informative commentary. We've all been enjoying your vacation thru both your photos and your writing.

That looked like a long walk on your knees.
Love the rock paintings.

Thanks guys, The 'long' walk was enhance by a wide lens but still an effort. When I first heard it I thought, from the bottom of the mountain....all 25 miles!

Crossed the border into the US of A today. Warmest weather for a week in San Juan Capistrano. We'll go to the mission here tomorrow. Changed a lot since I was last here only 35 years ago.

March 16 I believe Bob, might be fun to wait here and see them come on in.
