Hi Eric,

I'm sure there are many different ways to achieve this. But this is how I did it.

I shined a small led lamp from up above the flower which ended up reflecting too much light. Also, the mirror/light reflected everything above and around the immediate area near the mirror. So, I took a black cotton cloth, taped it on a piece of cardboard which , in turn, I placed above the mirror and flower.

I used the light again, but this time, with the cloth above, it turned everything black except for the flower and stem. I also underexposed the shot by .7 which helped to highlight sections of the petals.

Sounds like a fair amount of work, but it took about 8 minutes to put together.


So you want to be a better photographer? Open your eyes and take a look at what is all around you.
