Default Paralympics Athletics Finals - E3 + 35-100F2+EC14

I'm going to post a few OOC Jpegs from Saturdays Paralympics Athletics final - the light turned bad really quickly from 7pm onwards even though it looked fairly well lit to my eyes in the stadium. Looking at the pics, ideally I should have been shooting at ISO3200 and at F4 but with the E3 we know that's not going to happen as it can band at ISO 1600. The 282 mm (FF equiv) was just too short even from the good seating position I had .. made worse by the lady that sat directly in front and waved the Union flag over her head as much as she could or the dude two rows infront who stood up constantly to watch .

I'm going to PP in LR 4 and see I can improve them without loosing too much detail:

One of the 400m's womens wheelchair finals going around for a warm up lap.

Men's High Jump - One of the US athlete's attempting his 2nd jump

Womens 400mm Final - "On your marks"

"Go"

Poland's World record High jump - broke the paralympic High jump with this one

Men's 800mm Wheelchair relay finals

I think this was an 800m Final - simply not able to lock and track focusing with the E3 as they were going round the bend and when I did .. there was a pole in the middle of the shot.

The Main Event - the 400mm Mens T43/T44 final - the atmosphere was just electric.. Ive never seen, heard or felt anything like it!

Finishing line .. Oscar smashed his world record by 4 secs.. Shot between the crowd which all stoodup as he crossed the finishing line... Whats annoying is the E3 was constantly back focusing when that far out. I'd assumed that if I had focused to infinity and onto the middle of the track then athletes would at least be in focus but thats not the case.

Oly needs to pull its finger out .. its got the lenses and its about time they gave us a camera body to match the glass...

I wish I could go back to last wee and hired the 150F2 +EC .. If they don;t I may just hire an EOS or Nikon D700 or something for future events...

Nice shots and interesting commentary. You give a good feel of the atmosphere of the events.

P.S. Do you set your camera to use the single point focus?

These are very good. This is difficult shooting even with very expensive pro gear.

In US stadia the fans do have a tendency to enforce courteous behavior, although the enforcement itself isn't always courteous.

What's really satisfying is when you have a very obnoxious fan of the opposing team, who gets silenced by the home team mopping the floor with the opposing team. I was at a baseball game recently where there was an incredibly obnoxious NY Mets fan behind us. The grand slam home run by the Nationals got him quiet for most of the rest of the game. It was perfect!

Hi Ted/Steve

Steve I was using the centre AF only .. I've tried the diamond pattern a few times but the E3 just seems to use the wrong AF point and usually back focuses so I left well alone. I didn't use the burst mode on the cam as the shutter feels as if its gonna break when i do so all of the pics were single shots. The High Jump I was aiming at the bar and simply waiting the athlete to attempt the jump... I'd say its a 50% hit rate.

I've come away feeling pretty frustrated at what I managed to get - I really wish I had gone for the 150F2 + EC14. It possibly was a once in a life time event so I should have pulled out all of the stops. Well at least I now know where you can use the 35-100F2 + EC14.

The other thing thats bugged me looking at the pics is that I should have gone straight to ISO1250 and pushed the shutter speed higher than 1/200 or 1/250s @ F4 - ISO800, where as at 282mm , I should have been at least 1/500s or faster. I know that ISO1250 the files should still have been ok and that I was stupid not to use it.

A curious thing about the AF is that its totally unable to lock focus on head on subject but as soon as its moved away its able to keep up... You'd think if it cant do one it cant do the other...

Ok.. here's a few 100% crops of the earlier pics PP in LR . I never apply any luminous NR but these all have 25 dialed in via NR and 50 Colour.

High Jump:

Warmup

400m Womens final

Mens 800m Wheelchair relay
